WHICH VISA DO YOU NEED?

Citizens of countries that adhere to the Visa Waiver Program (Italy is one of them) can enter and remain in the United States for a period not exceeding 90 days without a visa. In this case they will have to request and obtain an online authorization called ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization).

Citizens who cannot apply for ESTA and those who intend to stay in the US for more than 90 days will have to apply for a visa at the American Embassy / Consulate in Italy. Depending on the duration and the reason for the trip (tourism, study, work, volunteering, medical care), there are different types of visas. Here are some examples:

EXCHANGE PROGRAMS

The J visa is issued as part of international exchange programs. It can be used to study, do research, consultancy or to do paid work and internships at schools, universities or companies. It has a maximum duration of 18 months. With a J visa you are allowed to get an American driving license, social security number and travel abroad.

TRANSIT/CREW MEMBERS

The C1 visa is for those who travel to a foreign country and must pass through the United States as part of their trip. The D visa is for crew members of cruise ships or international airlines.

TOURISM AND BUSINESS

Type B visas allow you to stay in the USA for a maximum period of 6 months. They may be required for business (B1), tourism or medical reasons (B2), or a combination of both (B1/B2).

ACADEMIC STUDIES

The F visa allows you to attend academic or language courses at universities or colleges, high schools, private elementary schools, seminars, conservatories, language schools.
